External-Heating Rotary Kiln—Pioneering a New Era in Calcination Technology

An external-heating rotary kiln is a large-scale, high-temperature reaction device whose structure mainly consists of a cylindrical shell, supporting system, drive mechanism, combustion system, sealing system, and other components. In an external-heating rotary kiln, the heat source is located outside the kiln body and does not come into direct contact with the materials inside the kiln. Instead, heat is transferred to the materials within the kiln through the kiln’s wall surface, enabling the materials to reach the required calcination temperature. This equipment is primarily used in industrial applications such as high-temperature oxidation reactions, high-temperature reduction reactions, and chemical roasting—processes where raw materials cannot be directly heated. The external-heating rotary kiln can be heated by various methods, including electric heating, fuel oil heating, and gas or natural gas heating.

The externally heated rotary kiln employs advanced calcination technology. Its operating principle involves feeding the mixed raw materials into a rotating cylinder, where they undergo chemical reactions at high temperatures, thereby altering their physical and chemical properties. Since the materials do not come into direct contact with the heat source, this process avoids contamination of the materials and disruption of the reaction atmosphere.

Thanks to continuous technological innovation and accumulation over recent years, Chaoyang Heavy Machinery Equipment Development Co., Ltd. has achieved remarkable success in the field of rotary kilns—particularly in the area of externally heated rotary kilns. The company has established an integrated industrial model that covers everything from process design and equipment manufacturing to installation and commissioning. As of now, the largest externally heated rotary kiln produced and manufactured by Chaoyang Heavy Machinery Equipment Development Co., Ltd. has a diameter of 3 meters and can reach firing temperatures as high as 1,100°C.

Compared with traditional externally heated rotary kilns, the externally heated rotary kiln we have designed and developed features the following characteristics:

1. The selection of kiln body materials should balance performance and cost-effectiveness, achieving the best operational results in the most economical way.

2. The external combustion device features a flexible design, adopting a two-section modular assembly approach for easy inspection and maintenance. Meanwhile, the internal space of the heating chamber has been optimized to ensure uniform heating across all parts of the cylinder while minimizing heat loss to the maximum extent possible.

3. Temperature can be precisely controlled according to actual production process requirements, thereby ensuring product quality.

4. The material feeding and discharging system within the kiln has also been carefully designed and optimized to ensure uniform heating and smooth movement of the materials inside the kiln.

5. Based on the requirements of the reaction atmosphere, adopt the optimal sealing method. For reducing atmospheres, we have achieved truly oxygen-free sealing.
